In Praise Of Sunna

It is impossible to prove or disprove the existence of the god of the Jews, Christians and Moslems. It is a matter of faith – not of logic and reason. But if he exists he sure as hell is a thug compared to some of the Pagan gods and goddesses. If you believe in Yahveh – fair enough! That’s your problem!

But worshipping the Sun, for instance, would seem to be rather more rational and sensible. Here’s why in the words of brilliant George Carlin:

“I’ve begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It’s there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, and a lovely day. There’s no mystery, no one asks for money, I don’t have to dress up, and there’s no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to ‘God’ are all answered at about the same 50% rate.”

In some traditions the Sun is considered to be a Goddess. In Norse mythology, for example, we find Sunna, the sun goddess. The sun, ” die Sonne”, takes the feminine article “die” instead of the masculine “der” in the German language. I will therefore refer to the Sun as She.

There are many reasons for you to abandon Yahveh, the psychopathic god of the Bible, and to convert to the worship of the Sun. Allow me to share some of my own reasons with you.

The Sun does not demand of you to abandon the right to think for yourself. She does not ask you to forsake common sense and take at face value everything some self-proclaimed “holy men” (be they called prophets, rabbis, priests, imams) claim in Her name.

She does not require the sacrifice of animals or humans and She won’t be pissed off if you light a fire on a Sabbath, eat meat on a Friday, fail to say grace after meals and never make hadj.

She doesn’t care one bit whether you are circumcised or baptized or neither. Neither does She concern Herself with what consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom if it harms none.

She doesn’t blow Her own trumpet by claiming credit for the good things that happen in the world (“Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!”). Neither does She pin the blame for the bad things on us mere mortals (“You have sinned and need to be severely punished”).

She doesn’t bless some thoroughly rotten believers with incredible wealth and power while condemning millions upon millions of decent non-believers to a life of abject poverty and misery in the Here And Now and eternal damnation in the World To Come.

She doesn’t have a son who needs to die an excruciating death so that you are cleansed of your alleged sins and can have eternal life. Nor will She claim to be loving and just and then cold-heartedly place a curse on a “sinner” and his innocent children and children’s children for ten generations.

She doesn’t harden the heart of a Pharaoh and then punish him and all the people of Egypt for his hardhearted attitude.

She doesn’t grant anyone the Divine Right to rule over others. She doesn’t weep and wail when a Jew is killed in Israel while at the same time shrugging off the slaughter of thousands upon thousands of Palestinians.

She doesn’t have favourites, some Chosen people, but blesses all of us and the entire Earth with Her life-giving light and warmth.

She does not smite you with assorted plagues and curses when you fail to pay homage to Her for She never petulantly demanded to be worshipped and showered with praise.

Enough said! How many more reasons do you need?

So, here are my questions to you:

What is not to love about the Sun?

If you  haven’t converted yet – why not?
